» Elle Style Awards 2010

Amid the madness and mayhem of London Fashion Week, Elle magazine put on a show of its own in the form of its annual Style Awrads ceremony.

The awards are held each year to honour the most stylish ambassadors in the TV, film and fashion industries.

This year’s gala drew a remarkably slick array of A-star guests. The Olsen twins, who were named Elle's Style Icons of 2010, rose to the occasion in carpet-sweeping gowns. Mary-Kate rocked her trademark gothic look in black Lanvin, while Ashley wore a Christian Lacroix haute couture, in oyster-silk, luxuriously layered with mounds of tulle.

Carey Mulligan, who won the Actress of the Year at the BAFTAs, again shunned British designers in favour of a python jacket by the Olsen twins’ fashion label “The Row”, most-likely picked out after spotting it at the catwalk show in New York last week, where she sat on the front-row. Teamed with a black, knee-length skirt, the effect was more school teacher than red carpet.

Reliably, Dannii Minogue brightened up the proceedings in a canary-yellow, one-shoulder gown, by Australian designer, Lisa Ho, which skimmed her baby bump with great success. Rosie Huntingon-Whiteley oozed Hollywood glamour in a blood-red, silk gown by Galliano for Dior, with a fur stole.

While freezing temperatures might have suggested thick tights and jackets, those London girls about town, Alexa Chung and Daisy Lowe, were not deterred from parading around in the key trends for next season. Both looked like butter wouldn’t melt in powder-blue. Alexa wore a finely-knitted dress by Chanel, while Daisy opted for a look from the virginal Miu Miu collection
