Model Focus: Miss Niesh Money
How would you describe your style, and who are your personal fashion icons?
My style is a mish-mash of everything. I love to look smart, ladylike, but then I also like to throw things together without too much thought. I've never been one to think too much about what I wear. Right now, I'm inspired by so many fashion eras - the 60’s and the 80’s in particular. Personal fashion icons range from Twiggy to Santogold, Audrey Kitching, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, even Estelle and my beloved Amy Winehouse!
What's the reasoning behind the name Miss Niesh Money?
(Laughs) Well! I've always been called Niesh by friends and family. Miss Niesh is a title that I bestowed upon myself. The "money" I added when thinking of names for the fashion line that I'm looking to start in the New Year! That and the alliteration has a nice ring to it... what a nerd ;)
You've just been featured within cult classic Super Super magazine... how did that come about, and how does it feel to be seen in such a well known publication?
I know, scary, right? Well, it’s actually an advert for a clothing company called Girl Gang. I just happened to text a friend to say "Hey, what's up" and she said "Oh hey! I saw you in Super Super!"
I dashed out to get it thinking it'd a thumbnail sized pic, but it turned out to be a full page! I opened it and my stomach did summersaults! If feels exciting but kinda scary too!
You're combining modelling with appearing in a band... tell us a little about your music, and how you find juggling the two?
Being in a band is the best. My band mates are good friends and we're all on the same page. We play shows when we can, we write together when we can. We love being an example to other women, and guys, out there. My girls are fully supportive of my modelling career, so to speak. I like to think of both as a platform for saying all the things that I have to say to the world!
Are people ever surprised by the fact that you're in a hardcore band in relation to your image?
Yes and no. Yes when we play real punk shows full of old guys. It’s good though because often we're into the same bands, similar styles. It’s great to be the one to show that you don't need a rainbow coloured mo-hawk to appreciate that genre of music. It’s kind of annoying when people expect you to like a certain style because of how you look but it’s an awesome feeling when you break that mould! The only people who aren't surprised are my parents or people have known me for years! (Laughs)
Have you ever felt pigeonholed into a more urban stereotype?
I was worried that this would be an issue, but in all honesty, it really hasn't occurred thus far! I'm glad because that'd be my idea of hell! Never be what other people want you to be.
As a tattooed model, have you ever found these to be a hindrance to your modelling work, or are photographer's attitudes towards them changing?
My tattoos have never been an issue! I think photographers are beginning to be more open about it and exploring it more. It can only be a good thing. Look at Jean Paul Gaultier and the recent Levi campaigns! I think tattooed women have a little way to go yet but we're getting there for sure.
You're planning on creating your own label; are you as interested in the business aspect of fashion as you are in modelling?
Definitely. I've always been into fashion, so creating something I and other people can wear is an exciting thought! I'm also very business minded and think that working for yourself while doing something that you love is part of becoming your own person. If I can produce something with my name on it that others appreciate than I'll be the happiest woman alive! I also want to open a veggie café/vegan bakery but that's for another interview!
