Good Hair
"All that Creamy crack…but am I addicted?"
I headed down to the Mayfair hotel in London for the screening of Good Hair starring one of my long time favourite comedians Chris Rock. So here I am seated at my first ever film review and as I'm new to this and I hope I don't look too excited as I see well known black celebs such as Adrian Lester from BBC's Hustle series, children's TV personality Josie D'arby, Nina Benjamin from the comedy series Two Non Blondes and radio personality Geoff Schumann.
This event isn't about my celeb spotting- it's about black people's perceived idea that somehow their nappy natural hair is just not good enough and how this perception translates into a million pound industry for mainly White and Asian entrepreneurs.
In Chris Rock's debut as a social orator I can tell you it's a good look if you have hair and you're all about funking it up. Fellas you just might think this isn't for you but trust me, if you have a woman in your life, you need to see this. I like documentaries but they can be very factual and even boring, but in Good Hair we get to follow the eccentric stylists taking part in the Bronner Bros styling competition in Atlanta. There is also quite a few barbershop scenes.
After watching this I felt enlightened and inspired and although it was a funny film, I heard the politics within the game of hair. Chemical applications used to straighten or add curls to kinky hair are very powerful products. The process can be painful and the chemicals dangerous. It really brought to light the health and self esteem issues of wanting to aspire to what some people define as beautiful.
All in all, it reinforced the idea that beauty isn't just skin deep. I guess wherever there is money there is always a political issue of ethics. Point blank, this film is entertaining. I laughed so much! Yo Chris as a weave wearer, I salute you!
