When I heard that Star Trek was coming to the big screen, I must admit that I was not entirely convinced it would work. Being made to watch Star Trek the television series as a child by my older cousins and uncle, I was less than convinced that the story line would be gripping and the cast would be able to fit into the big shoes the original cast members left. How wrong was I!

If unlike me you never watched the original Star Trek, don't worry!! JJ Abrams did come up with a tremendous idea to regenerate Star Trek by recasting and going back to basics.

The writers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the duo behind Transformers 2, cleverly weave their young heroes in and out of trouble whilst keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Chris Pine's young Kirk, who enjoys driving his uncle's classic car off a cliff and cheats in his Star Fleet exam, encapsulates William Shatner's smug swagger and virile vanity down to a T. Brilliant Zachary Quinto (Sylar in TV's Heroes) oozes intellectual arrogance as the forerunner to Leonard Nimoy's Spock. Throughout the film you see Spock struggle with being part human and doing what his head tells him. The remainder of the cast are brilliant as well, Simon Pegg has not forgotten his humor in this film; he still uses it well for his character, Scotty. Other performances are fun to watch, including Karl Urban's delightfully cynical Dr McCoy; and Eric Bana's intense Nero the bad boy.

JJ Abrams did not neglect the diehard fans either. There are treats such as heroic cameos for Chekov and a sword wielding Sulu. The film has brilliant special effects including CGI monsters. But even though it's a new film they have not forgotten where the film came from which is the 1960's. This film was brilliantly cast and written perfectly.
