Padded Room
Now when I first heard this album, it really didn't hold me. As a matter of fact, it was a real task to listen to. I mean it's not your average, it still holds a very strong underground flavour. I hadn't heard anything from Mr Budden since Pump it up so my expectations were high because I loved that album. However this album was coming from a very different and troubled place.
The ‘Padded Room' theme sweeps right through this album, and at first glance (well the listening version of a glance) this album seemed very depressing; there were only really a few songs I could nod my head to, but then it got to the last track Pray for me and this song grabbed me. The concept was very original, he's having a conversation with God; this track is a real eye opener. The effect of this track made me go back, and start to understand where he was coming from. It gave me a deeper understanding of his perspective on certain tracks. The first single he is planning to release from ‘The Padded Room' is The future featuring The Game, produced by Fyu-Chur.
Joe's unique voice and flow, pretty much carry this album through at some points. The music in particular isn't too intricate, the majority of the album had that same style; simple beats accompanied by clever lyrics. Clearly his strength, and he displays this with every chance; Couldn't Help It is another strong track on this album.
I have my favourites, but I want you to make up your own mind so I won't say. (In My Sleep!)
Joe Budden is definitely back, a long awaited return due to a number of complications. Signing to Rock-A-Fella records didn't do him any favours, as soon as he arrived, Jay-Z left soon after. Now he's finally signed to Amalgam Digital, and has found a home with them.
This album is definitely one for the hardcore Hip-Hop fans. It's deep, clever and quite insightful. With a solid 14 tracks, you will be satisfied, even if it does take a short while to grow on you.
