Slaves
A raw, unforgiving, graphic and simply true look into prison life. Slaves is the new play by writer Rex Obano. A piece of theatre that will have you laughing, squirming and crying by the time the lights fade on the final act.
It is the story of “Jenks” (Beru Tessema) , a young Black male who has gone to prison for his crimes. And Chris Jackson (Adetomiwa Edun), a new Black prison officer who is drafted in to re-write prison race relations. Jenks plays the hard man but prison life soon tests his resolve. While Chris' naivety of the prison system has a grave effect on events. With a cast of actors who all hold their own and command stage presence. Slaves is a play that you will not want to miss. Twists, turns, ups, downs and the occasional porno mag will leave theatre goers breathless.
The mission statement of Theatre 503 is “Dedicated to fearless new writing from the boldest voices of today”. And I couldn't agree more. Rex Obano has captured the gritty under belly of the prison system and I hope there is more to come from him.
