Akala Launch Event

Conscious hip hop artist Akala last night performed in front of an intimate crowd at City's trendy gig spot, The East Village.

For those of you who are unaware of who Akala is or what his purpose is, you are living in a dream state. The UK's comparison to Common with a raw edge is the best description you will get. Freedom activist is the honest way of saying Akala does not mess about, his lyrical content is beyond the typical mindset of a Londoner in year 2010 and he delivers up tempo, rock, hip hop beats with passion in every performance.

His new album doublethink is out May 3rd and is the third offering from the young star, based on the book 1984 written in 1949 by George Orwell. It speaks of a future where there are CCTV cameras everywhere; people are controlled and conform to the laws of society, a future that we are living in today.

He performed tracks from his forthcoming album, starting the set with a song titled ‘Welcome to Dystopia'. He also performed hard hitting track ‘Yours and my children'. During each song, he talked of his experiences in Brazil and what he hopes to achieve and differentiate with his music. Akala also showcased his lyrical talent by performing his infamous ‘F64' which the crowd had requested.

Akala's music is a gateway between hip hop, storytelling and spoken word and depicts the media in all of its glory. I recommend you purchase a copy of his album, Doublethink on May 3rd.
