Usher - Raymond vs. Raymond
The multi-million selling R&B artist, has reclaimed he’s sex symbol status with a seventh album. Although Usher’s last album ‘Here I stand’ was heavily criticised by fans, some were a little sceptical on the quality of Raymond Vs Raymond. On this occasion Usher had a few controversial stories to tell, that some would argue was the contributing factor to the success of ‘confessions’.
An album title with two possible meanings ‘Raymond v Raymond’ is he referring to he’s battle with himself (alter ego) or he’s recent marriage which led to divorce? The introductory message spoken by the man himself suggests the latter but hey; that’s entertainment and makes for successful PR.
Monstar is reminiscent of an old Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis production for Janet Jackson; whether it is a great opening for the album is questionable however it is easy listening.
For those who like the new generic dance sound which is being adopted by R&B and hip hop artists alike, Usher has managed to please with a Will.I.Am production ‘Oh my god’, a very infectious song; if you feel it lacks substance you may grow to sing it on an occasion, as its repetitive and gaining huge air play. Those who love the sound will be impressed with usher as it is the first official single from the album.
‘Lil freak’ is definitely a up-tempo single, something to play in your car and dance to in the club, a great beat accompanies with X-rated lyrics, It certainly demands your attention topped off with emerging artist Nicki Manaj, who seems to be everywhere at the moment. Living up to her last name she raps about getting another female to join in extracurricular activities with both her and Usher (read between the lines)
With other appearances from T.I, Ludacris and will.i.am, it would seem this is the album that should have followed ‘Confessions’. 14 – 15 track album depending on where you buy it, 50% of the album is definitely worth listening to; in today’s standards that’s a success. It does not necessarily flow as a cohesive album but more like separate entities/sinlges marketed and sold as package. The industry insiders state that it’s all about having great singles that being the case Usher has definitely managed to meet those requirements.
