Good Hair
All that Creamy crack…but am I addicted?
I headed down to the Mayfair hotel in London for the screening of Good Hair starring one of my long time favourite comedians Chris Rock. So here I am seated at my first ever film review, I’m new to this and I hope I don’t look too excited as I see well known black celebs such as Adrian Lester from BBC’s Hustle series, children’s TV personality Josie D’arby, Nina Benjamin from the comedy series Two Non Blondes and radio personality Geoff Schumann.
This event isn’t about my celeb spotting- it’s about black people’s perceived idea that somehow their nappy natural hair is just not good enough and how this perception translates into a million pound industry for Black, White and Asian entrepreneurs.
Guys you may be put off by this but I think it will be just as appealing for you as you may learn something new. In Chris Rock’s debut as a social orator I can tell you it’s a good look if you have hair and you’re all about funking it up. Fellas you just might think this isn’t for you but trust me, if you have a woman in your life, be it mother or girlfriend, you need this. I like documentaries but they can be very factual and even boring, but in Good Hair we get to see the beautifully eccentric stylists that we follow in the Bronner Bros styling competition as well as the barbershop.
After watching this I felt a variety of things. I felt enlightened and inspired and although the comedy was sweet, I heard the politics within the game of hair; whether it be weave or the chemical applications of products like relaxers and perms which are very powerful products used to either straight or add synthetic permanent curls to the usually kinky hair, the process can be very painful and the chemicals very dangerous that bring in the health and social aspect of wanting to aspire to what some define as beautiful.
I learned enough to know that beauty isn’t just skin deep I guess wherever there is money there is always a political issue of ethics. This film is short enough to keep you entertained while long enough to get you thinking. I laughed so much too. Yo Chris I as a weave wearer, I salute you!
