ACS Kings and Queens 2010 event was held on Sunday 20th June 2010 at Ocean Music Arena in East London, Mare Street 7-11pm.

I was standing in front of the Hackney Empire looking across the street, thinking “where is the Ocean Music Arena?” Then, I saw a long line of fashionable, urban, inner city people dressed to kill. I was like, “that’s where it is.” Inside, my guest and I were asked to take our seats. The venue was packed to the brim, the room was live, and the atmosphere was banging; mans looking correct, chicks looking slick. ACS Kings and Queens is about giving the conventional pageant a twist, by creating a theme that celebrates diversity as well as education. We see eight university battles for the status of King or Queen. In the end, it came down to King Peter and Queen Nicholette of Bedfordshire who took the crown.

I’ve been to quite a few pageants and although they are generally about beauty and one’s perception of it, we are introduced to a variety of touching themes. These included comedy as well as a look at some issues that we as black people can relate to – such as awareness for sickle cell. There was also a poetry session where two young artists weaved stories through their poems that either made us laugh, or want to drop a tear. The models donned attire made from London’s up and coming designers, with clothing that could give London Fashion Week a run for its money. We saw styles from contemporary evening wear through to traditional attire, which was personally my best, as this was where we saw the real Kings and Queens within each model come out and shine.

I got a feeling from the event organisers Anthony, Jide, Kwabena, Celestine, Kevin and Tunde, reminding me that London isn’t all about “hoodies” and the negative press we get on a daily basis. We have kings in our midst and ACS Kings & Queens is a reminder to all - not just the models – that we are kings and queens. Now, let’s walk and talk like we recognise that fact; we have talent, and people out there willing to support that talent. I enjoyed myself and looking around at the end of the night, I think everyone else did too.
