Wu Massacre - Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon
The three members of successful Hip Hop collective Wu Tang Clan, Method Man, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon teamed up and joined forces to bring Wu Massacre. The 12 track album is used as a platform for the three rappers to show that Wu Tang is very much alive. With collaborations with rappers Sheek Louch, Trife, Sun God (Ghostface’s eldest son) , Solomon Childs and Streetlife. Wu Tang member Inspectah Deck makes an appearance on ‘ Gunshowers’ which talks of wanting what is owed as well as hustling. With only 3 songs which features all three ‘Dangerous’ ‘Miranda’ and ‘Our Dreams’ Meth, Killah and Rae individually put their style and flavour on each song. This album includes songs on social issues from poverty to women.
Like all Wu Tang albums the use of samples that pay homage to earlier music is heard throughout. The first single released ‘Our Dreams’ which heavily samples the late Michael Jackson’s ‘Almost There’ had done fairly well in the US Billboard charts. It’s inspirational and soulful sound was produced by Wu Tang member RZA. Wu Massacre is like typical Wu Tang album the strong narration, dark beats and traditional East Coast flavour. Having all had flourishing solo careers Method Man, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon decided to make this album to keep their brand out there.
Wu Tang have encountered some trials and tribulations in the past, with the rumoured departure of member U God, legal issues and the death of ODB in 2004 they have managed to stand strong and produce music true to the Wu Tang form. Wu Tang formed in the early 90s , they infused their love of Kung Fu and Hip Hop which made them different compared to other artist.
Their first single ‘Protect Ya Neck’ is donned as a classic and is still very much relevant today. Other classic Wu Tang hits include ‘Killer Bees’ and the commercial hit ‘Gravel Pit’. MTV had ranked Wu Tang as the 5th greatest Hip Hop group of all time in 2007. This album is a throwback into the Wu Tang vaults and shows us that they are very much alive and relevant today.
