The Round Up
The Round Up tells the story of Joseph Weisman an 11 year old boy whom with his family seeks refuge in France from his native Poland in the 1940s. The story starts by showing Josephs’ seemingly happy life in Montmatre, Paris although the presence of Jews in the community isn’t welcomed by all the locals. This happy life is quickly turned upside down when the Nazis who now control France seize and round up as many Jews as possible at the request of Hitler. The film turns into a detailed account of the Jewish Holocaust in France after the Nazis detain Joseph, his family and Jewish friends/neighbours. The Round Up is a comprehensive account of the Journey these Jews/ families take after being detained in concentration camps.
It’s beautifully played and the insight into actual personal experiences of both the ostracised Jews and those sent to detain as well as aid them is descriptive. You can’t help but form an attachment to the characters, feel their anguish and watch in discomfort at their sadness and abuse. The Round Up delves into the harsh realities of history, an account of inhuman actions and unveils the horrific truth that thousands suffered at the hands of the Nazis.
The film captures unimaginable experiences of these detainees, whilst carefully straying away from giving the film a dull morbid viewing experience. As an audience you are able to engage, laugh, cry and watch in amazement at the film. A definite must see.
